搜索技术中心 (STC) 由微软亚洲研究院和微软Live Search于2005年10月在北京联合创建。该中心由微软公司顶尖的工程师和研究员共同组成,其目标是致力于提高当前搜索技术水平,并为用户提供更加智能的在线搜索体验。

我们的使命是:
和Live Search一起,开发更具创意的搜索产品和服务。
无缝地结合基础研究与产品开发,加速技术创新。
为发展出下一代的互联网服务平台铺平道路。

中国互联网搜索

搜索技术中心立足于中国本地的市场、语言和文化,并与全球Live Search团队开展积极的合作,推出了更具竞争力的互联网搜索产品,涵盖了万维网搜索、黄页搜索、手机搜索、多媒体搜索和新闻搜索等多种领域。另外,该中心已经和微软许多的中国合作伙伴,比如中国电信进行着一系列卓有成效的合作项目。搜索技术中心独特的以基础研究和产品开发相互促进的模式,极大地加快了将创新推向市场的速度,也远远超越于传统的研发惯例。更好的汉语查询提示和拼写纠错功能的推出,就是一个将研究应用到产品的突出例子。

基础架构

具有可以有效地管理成千上万的服务器、数以亿计的用户查询和数以十亿计的文档的基础架构,是在全球互联网搜索市场竞争中决胜的必备条件之一。搜索技术中心基础架构组的目标是提高现有的操作基础架构,将我们的性能提高到更高的层次。

我们已经在下列领域中进行扎实的投入:分布式计算,数据库技术和自动化操作系统。这些领域的工作,都是微软公司为实现“全球搜索市场中最具有竞争力的一员”的核心工作。

微软正致力于将纯文本搜索转换为结构化搜索,为用户提供更相关的结果以及更具用户交互性的搜索体验。在分类、文档分割、机器学习以及用户反馈方面的大力投资,将让搜索技术中心由无结构的web文档转向有结构的文档,以及用这些结构提升用户体验。

项目介绍

Internet Search in Asia

People at STC understand the local market, the culture, and the language. The center has been actively working with the global Live Search organization to deliver a more competitive Internet search product that covers the core Web, yellow pages, mobile, multimedia and news search. Thanks to STC’s unique model of aligning basic research and development, innovation technologies have been quickly brought to market, far faster than traditional R&D practices. An example is joint collaboration on core technologies that have enabled better Chinese language query suggestions and spelling correction. Currently STC is responsible for product planning, managing in country partners and core engineering for China, Japan and Korean markets.

Infrastructure

A key part of competing in the global Internet search marketplace is having core infrastructure in place to efficiently manage tens of thousands of servers, hundreds of millions of queries, and billions of documents. The STC infrastructure team aims to improve existing operational infrastructure and move our capabilities to the next level. Substantial investments are being made in the areas of distributed computing, database technology and operations automation systems. Work in these areas is central to Microsoft’s commitment to improving on its role as a competitive player in the global Internet search marketplace.

Next Generation Search

Microsoft is making large investment to transition from plain text search to a structured search experience to provide users more relevant answers and a richer, more interactive user experience using those answers. Core investments in classification, document segmentation, machine learning and feedback loops enable STC to create features that infer structure from unstructured web documents and to use that structure in a substantially improved search user experience. This technology has been effectively deployed to dramatically improve the Live Search Product search capability. In addition to moving from plan text to structured search, STC is investing in core technology to help move Internet search from plain text to multimedia. These investments are focused on improving video/image search, video summarization and advanced UX for multimedia search.

    Steve Macbeth is currently the General Manager of the Search Technology Center (STC) in Beijing, China. STC is an engineering group that works on Internet Search product development for both global and local features. He has worked for Microsoft for more than five years in various senior product development roles at company headquarters in Redmond, WA. Including two years as a technical strategist in the Natural Interactive Services Division helping to drive company strategy on natural language, speech recognition, assistance, and activity-centric computing. During this time Steve was awarded 10 patents in the area of natural computing and activity-centric computing.

    Prior to joining Microsoft, Steve was the founder of two successful technology startups in Vancouver, Canada. In his role as chief technology officer, he oversaw all aspects of engineering, product management, and company strategy.

    Steve is self taught in computer science, engineering, and business management through over 20 years of experience and learning in all stages and aspects of software development and technology business.

    In addition to his work at Microsoft, Steve is a senior associate with the Foresight Institute, a non-profit think tank and public interest institute on nanotechnology and the impact of advanced technology on society.
